Photographer's Statement
To understand the relationship between myself and nature and to express a visualized image from nature based on that understanding has been my study and practice for 27 years and counting. In that time photography has gone from a way of recording what the eye sees to a way of responding more personally to what the mind sees. And each response brings a technical challenge to capture that visualized image. Those challenges are met with the right gear in tow.
My photography begins with a slow, deliberate hiking pace designed to observe and recognize. Among the gear I carry are a tripod and cable release. These tools are not only used for the steadiness needed for longer exposures but for the time it takes to setup for the shoot which allows me to maintain that slow, deliberate pace throughout.
As a landscape/nature photographer I venture into areas where there are the fewest layers to peel back for the beauty. But that doesn't mean the beauty is always automatic or initially apparent. Nature, as a rule, is always changing and often, at first, perceived as chaos. Time and patience however reveal the order within... and it is ALWAYS worth the wait!
When I began making photographs I knew very little about it. I also knew very little about nature and even less about how my photography could be a conduit to a more meaningful connection. But, through visualizing my personal response to what I see and manifesting that image, I have come to a deeper understanding of myself and nature.
And so I photograph because the process changes me, and the changes keep me moving on like a river to my own sea.
